Wildlife and Habitat Management
Our management methods were developed with years of experience working for private landowners, state agencies, and corporations. You can trust us to provide the most comprehensive service to achieve your goals. Whatever the objectives of habitat management are, the production of healthy, quality animals living in quality habitats is the foundation to build on. Habitat maintenance and improvements are achieved through the periodic manipulation of native vegetation. High-quality wildlife habitat should have a diversity of plant types (grasses, weeds, brush, and trees) as well as varied plant structures (bare ground, tall grass areas, short grass areas, weedy areas, tall forested areas, etc.).
Certain management practices are applicable depending on the species targeted. However, not all these practices will be practicable every year, depending on the condition of vegetation and wildlife needs. Results and success of management practices are in part, dependent on the amount and timing of annual rainfall, as well as plant successional stage.
We have expertise in helping landowners achieve their goals of producing healthy animals living in productive quality habitats. Contact us today to schedule a site visit of your property and discuss your land management goals!
Wildlife Surveys, Site Visits, & Plant Inventories
Surveys are a broad view of your property, which estimates the various wild species, their population size, and location on your property for successful management. Tools, such as surveys, also satisfy many requirements by federal, state, and local governments to provide effective year-round management of wildlife or plant resources.
At Native Texas Wildlife, we have extensive experience in providing not only Threatened & Endangered Species surveys, but also general wildlife surveys for deer, birds, and small mammals. Various surveys we conduct annually include, but are not limited to, spotlight surveys, remote camera inventories, browse surveys, spring and winter bird surveys, small mammal trapping, and quail counts.
We will also “kick the dirt” with you while we walk the property discussing your management goals. During a site visit, we will discuss plants that occur on your property and their importance to wildlife, various habitat recommendations that may be applicable to your land, and more!
We can also categorize and provide a detailed list of the various woody and herbaceous plant species that occur on your land!
Riparian Buffer Establishment
Here at Native Texas Wildlife Service, we champion riparian buffers as an essential feature for productive land stewardship and sustainability. The balance between water and wildlife is vital for the longevity of the ecosystems on your property. Streamside buffers are an important part of stream systems because they decrease pollution, control erosion, and provide important wildlife habitats.
Degrading stream and riparian areas is a threat to water quality and wildlife habitat within many watersheds in central Texas. When the natural vegetation around streams is removed, erosion occurs. Stream erosion is a problem for many reasons because it causes sedimentation and siltation downstream, erosion also degrades wildlife habitat, and eroded banks are unable to control flooding.
We help landowners designate and establish riparian buffers along their stream systems. Often, just fencing off the stream area and deferment from livestock is enough to help re-establish healthy riparian areas. However, in highly degraded systems where very little vegetation occurs, woody plant establishment may be needed. Each year, we collect hundreds of native seeds from woody species such as Shumard oak, Bur oak, Chinquapin oak, Sycamore, Cottonwood, and Pecan to start seedlings in order to help restore degraded stream buffers. We are happy to talk you through the process, please reach out today!
Native Grass Establishment & Restoration
Whether inter-seeding into existing pasture or complete conversion from improved pasture to native grasses, we offer a wide array of seeding services. If you are interested in native grass and wildflower plantings or thinking about establishing summer and winter food plots, we have the expertise and specialized equipment to meet your grass establishment needs.
We operate top-of-the-line equipment including a John Deere 5075E and 3032E tractors. We also have specialty equipment for extremely difficult to access areas.
We run a Truax no-till utility grass drill which is specifically designed to plant grasses and legumes on a wide variety of site conditions. The equipment we operate is ideal for drilling in close quarters, such as narrow ditch bottoms, pond dams, scattered trees, and brush, or around structural improvements such as driveways, culverts, pads, etc. Our drill ensures productive seed-to-soil placement - saving valuable time and money!
Double disc furrow openers and depth bands optimize seed placement and seed to soil contact insuring proper germination and retaining soil moisture.
Multiple seed boxes give the flexibility to seed native fluffy seeds, cool season species, small grains, legumes, and wildflowers.
Planting can be accomplished as no-till and inter-seeding in most conditions, as well as on a prepared seedbed, to conventional seed beds.
Accurate seed metering ensures that seeds are spread evenly across the planting site.
